Ashanti Stalker Jailed Again
A man convicted of stalking Ashanti has been handed prison time and slapped with a five-year restraining order. Devar Hurd was found guilty of felony stalking in a New York court on March 18, five months after another jury was left deadlocked on the same charge, despite convicting him of nine other counts, including criminal contempt and harassment.
The charges all related to a 2013 arrest, after Hurd was accused of bombarding the R&B singer with lewd text and Twitter messages. The case had previously gone to trial in 2014, but ended in a mistrial after one of the jurors fell ill. On Thursday, Hurd returned to court for sentencing, and was ordered to serve between 16 months and four years behind bars. However, he will receive credit for the 32 months already served for violating a previous restraining order, and now it is up to officials at the Department of Corrections to determine if he should stay in prison for a longer period of time. Hurd was also ordered to stay away from Ashanti, her sister, and her mother for the next five years as part of a new protective order, reports TMZ. Hurd is no stranger to the authorities – he was sentenced to serve two years in jail in 2009 after his first conviction for stalking and aggravated harassment.
