“I have come here to make it as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton,” Sanders shared. “This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face.” He continued, “And there is no doubt in my mind that as we head into November, Hillary Clinton is far and away the best candidate to do that.” Sanders has not officially suspended his campaign due to reasons linked to the Democratic National Convention. During his time on stage he made sure to mention his progress on the campaign trail, gloating about his 1,900 delegates. However, he did admit defeat and gave Clinton the support she needed. “Secretary Clinton has won the democratic nominating process. And I congratulate her for that,” Sanders said. “She will be the Democratic nominee for president, and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States.” Trump was quick to respond to the endorsement, flying back with a series of tweets, explaining that Sanders did not stay true to himself. “I am somewhat surprised that Bernie Sanders was not true to himself and his supporters. They are not happy that he is selling out,” he tweeted. He also invited Sanders’ supporters to join him, rather than Clinton’s camp.
The 2016 Democratic National Convention will take place in Philadelphia on July 25 – 28.
