Cafe Owner Gives Homeless Man a Job Instead of Turning Him Away

A Minnesota cafe owner didn’t look at Marcus the way most people look at him. A homeless man, Marcus was used to being turned away by restaurant owners and people alike. However, Abigail, the cafe owner, didn’t tell him to leave when he came into her cafe begging for spare change.
Instead, Abigail offered him a job.
According to her Facebook post, Abigail asked Marcus, “Why don’t you have a job? You know nothing is given to me for free, right?”
Marcus, who had been on the streets since he was 16, said that he wasn’t able to find a job due to a lot of felonies, “so, now, I had to turn myself to the streets and get money the only way I know – stealing and asking for money,” Abigail says in her post.
But that didn’t deter Abigail, who was determined to help this man even though she could barely afford to.
Marcus gladly put on an apron and accepted the position working two hours a day washing dishes.
CBS News reports that Abigail “plans to make his position permanent.”
“Some restaurants wouldn’t even let you use their restrooms,” Abigail told CBS. “I don’t judge someone on how they look – go use it. I do not treat [homeless people] any different.”
It’s a good thing she didn’t, too, because as soon as Abigail offered Marcus a sandwich before starting his shift, he immediately took half of it, wrapped it in foil, and ran outside to give it to a homeless woman across the street.
Abigail told CBS how it “really touched” her, and she emphasized the importance of helping others who are less fortunate than you.
When she posted her and Marcus’ story on Facebook, it garnered more than 100,000 likes and over 38,000 shares.
Abigail said that she knows Marcus still has a long way to go, but that helping someone just a little can have a huge impact.
“Just like Marcus, I had my help,” she said. “I had plenty of people to help make it to where I am today. They believed I could do it. People need to have someone believe in them.”
