Chad Kroeger Takes Ex Avril Lavigne to Juno Awards
The Nickelback frontman and his band may have lost the Rock Album of the Year trophy at the music awards, but he still had a night to remember when he was joined by Lavigne, six months after the pair announced their separation in September, after two years of marriage. The two walked the red carpet at Calgary, Alberta’s Scotiabank Saddledome, where Lavigne told Canada’s Etalk that she was simply by his side for moral support. “I came with Chad because Nickelback got nominated,” she said, “and I’m just here supporting him.” Kroeger was also coy about a possible reconciliation, joking, “I got tired walking around with my band members, so I went and found hottie here,” referring to the “Sk8r Boi” star. Prior to the ceremony, Lavigne teased her appearance at the event on Instagram, by posting a video from the 2003 award show, when she won her first Juno – presented to her by Kroeger and his Nickelback bandmates.
Kroeger, who also helped induct singer/songwriter Burton Cummings into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the Junos, previously joined Lavigne as her date at the Clive Davis & The Recording Academy’s 2016 Pre-Grammy Gala in February. Neither Lavigne nor Kroeger were sporting their wedding rings at the music awards, but it’s clear they remain close friends – they have been working on music together since their split. The Canadian pop star announced the break-up on social media with a photograph from her wedding day. She told fans, “It is with a heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today… Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we’ve created many unforgettable moments. We are still and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support.” Lavigne was previously married to Sum 41 rocker Deryck Whibley.
