Halsey Reveals Past Suicide Attempt
Singer Halsey has confessed to attempting suicide as she battled bipolar disorder when she was a teenager. The “Ghost” singer, 21, has become one of music’s breakout stars over the past year. But in a new interview with Billboard, she opened up about the day she almost ended her life long before making it big.
Halsey revealed she felt greatly misunderstood while attending high school in New Jersey, and believe she was an outcast due to her tattoos and half-shaved hairstyle. During her senior year, the singer was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and admitted to a psychiatric hospital after a failed suicide attempt. “I had tried to kill myself,” she tells Billboard. “I was an adolescent; I didn’t know what I was doing. Because I was 17, I was still in a children’s ward. Which was terrifying. I was in there with nine-year-olds who had tried to kill themselves.” One of the things that helped Halsey get through her ordeal was her passion for music, and when she finally was released from the medical center, she knew she had to chase her dreams of becoming a professional singer. “There was no TV, no music, no nothing,” she said. “The day I got out of the hospital I was in the car and I was listening to Imagine Dragons. It was a f**king moment for me. I don’t think I realized how important music was to me before that. Three years later, I was opening their U.S. arena tour.” Speaking of her love for music, Halsey adds, “I could be having the worst day of my life, hate my body, think I’m fat, think I suck, and as soon as I hear the first few notes of my intro, that all goes away. Everything that I hate about myself goes away when I walk onstage. That’s why I cling to it so much – it keeps me from killing myself.”
