Hero Dog Saves Woman and Three Other Dogs From Deadly Rattlesnake
“Red” the dog is in dire condition after defending his family against a diamondback rattlesnake when it suddenly appeared in their yard. On a GoFundMe page created for the pooch, Kayla Alexander writes that her mother and their four dogs were walking through their yard when the poisonous snake attacked. Red, being the head of the pack, “went into protection mode” and instantly tried to divert the snake away from her mom and the other three dogs, taking several bites to the face in the process.
Her mother yelled for help and Alexander’s brother came out to try and kill the snake. As her mom attempted to pull Red back, their other dog Quail was bit in the face. After her brother killed the snake, they immediately drove to the emergency clinic where they each received two vials of antivenom. Each vial of antivenom costs $1,000 and there’s no telling how many they may need. The GoFundMe page also says the dogs are on hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which involves “breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or tube,” according to the Mayo Clinic, and is commonly used to treat scuba diving accidents. Alexander reports that their costs have exceeded $10,000, which they hope the fundraiser will help cover the costs. They’ve currently raised a little over $7,000. While the original post said that Red wasn’t doing well, an update announced a day ago said both dogs were able to come home, but still need to return to continue the oxygen therapy. They can only eat soft foods and are still on antibiotics and pain medication. Alexander said that if they surpass their fundraising goal, they will donate any leftover funds “to other pets in need of veterinarian services.” You can check on Red’s status and donate here.
