Hugh Jackman rescued his children and several other swimmers after they were caught in a dangerous current off the coast of Sydney.

The X-Men star was at Bondi Beach on Saturday when his two children – Oscar, 15, and Ava, 10 – became caught in the strong current and began to be dragged out to sea.

Jackman was chatting with former National Rugby League player and reality star Dan Conn and My Kitchen Rules star Lynzey Murphy on the beach at the time of the incident, editors at report.

Footage shows Conn running in to grab Oscar, while Jackman went in after his daughter and piggybacked her to safety. The actor was seen waving at others in the sea to try and get them to swim back to shore. He is then seen grabbing an unknown man and dragging him back to shore.

Lifeguards on the beach sprung into action and closed the beach, then headed into the water with jetskis to make a further 43 rescues.

Murphy said that Jackman was courageous and calm, adding, “When we got in the water 20 minutes earlier it was fine. Then the water just came up suddenly. He just pulled them calmly onto the sandbar.

“He was pretty level headed. If you start freaking out in front of your children it is only going to make it worse. He said thank you to both Dan and I. He was lovely.”

The actor was reunited with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness and two children after the dramatic rescue, and was too shaken to speak about the incident. A representative for Jackman has also declined to comment.
