Iggy Azalea Suffered ‘Psychotic Breakdown’ Last Year
Rapper Iggy Azalea was forced to scrap a tour last year after suffering a “psychotic breakdown.”
The “Fancy” hitmaker had planned to hit the road for The Great Escape Tour last spring, but all dates were postponed until the autumn, before Azalea decided to scrap the trek altogether in May.
She apologized to fans on Twitter, insisting she was “so sad” to pull the plug on the live shows, and she subsequently told Seventeen magazine she needed to take some time out because she was exhausted.
“Mentally, to be honest with you, I just feel I deserve a break,” she explained. “I’ve been going non-stop for the past two years, nearly every single day… (It’s) very emotionally draining to be on all the time and going all the time, planning all the time. It’s a lot, and it’s tough.”
Azalea has now reflected on her tough 2015, admitting the negative media coverage over homophobic comments she made in the past, allegations of cultural appropriation, and her plastic surgery news really took its toll on her mental well-being.
“I had to have a psychotic breakdown last year,” the 25-year-old told Britain’s Schon! magazine. “I felt tired and stressed out.”
The Australian star has since learned to accept she will always face criticism in the press, but she has finally realized the key to a happier existence is simply to ignore the drama and not engage in it on social media.
“Last year, I felt like I was definitely not in control of the media’s narrative of me,” she explained. “It made me feel very out of control of my own life or my ability to have my own perception of who I was. You don’t want someone else writing your narrative and making you the villain. Then I just realized that, you know what, you can’t control it and I think I accepted that and moved on to living my life.”
Azalea insists taking a break was just what her mind and body needed and now that her energy has been “renewed,” she is looking forward to completing her new album, Digital Distortion, and taking it on tour.
However, she will have to juggle her work life with her personal plans as she prepares to wed her fiance, basketball star Nick Young. Azalea tells the magazine she has already picked a date and location for the couple’s nuptials, but she fears it may already be too much to handle.
“It’s too much stuff,” she exclaimed. “I’ve got to a have a wedding and go on a f**king honeymoon and… put on an arena tour, all across the whole world.”
