Jeff Daniels Returns as ‘Newsroom”s Will McAvoy to Give His Opinion on Trump and Clinton
Will McAvoy is back and giving his take on the current (and crazy) election.
In a video produced by Bloomberg Television, Jeff Daniels resurrected his infamous character from The Newsroom to share his opinion about the 2016 election. Daniels had some help from Bloomberg’s Matt Negrin and Griffin Hammond who started off by asking him, as McAvoy, how Trump is the “best-case scenario” for Clinton. “I think for the first time in election history, her opponent might donate to her campaign,” McAvoy joked regarding Clinton campaign contributions. He quickly launched into the classic McAvoy monologue from the show’s premiere where the news anchor tears into the notion that “America is the greatest country in the world.” “He’s not the best-case scenario, John, that’s my answer,” McAvoy said in the video. “Donald Trump is a fact-bending loose cannon who alienates mainstream voters with everything he says. But he gets constant media attention for free. There won’t be a day from now until November when Trump isn’t on every TV channel.” He also made sure to even the playing field, commenting on Clinton’s role in the election. “There’s absolutely no evidence that Trump is the best-case scenario for Hillary Clinton. 38 percent of the people gave her a favorable rating. 30 percent of the people said she’s honest and trustworthy. Just 22 percent of Democrats say they’re enthusiastic about her being the nominee,” McAvoy shared after fully settling into character. “Sure, she beats Trump in some categories: like millennials, who don’t even show up to vote. She also leads in number messages deleted on her personal email server. But that aside. When you ask what makes Trump the best-case scenario for Hillary, I don’t know what the f— you’re talking about. His tiny hands?” The news anchor was also quick to dismiss the comments that it would be “unprecedented” for the country to have a female leader. “With a straight face, you’re going to tell me that electing a woman is unprecedented? Germany elected a female chancellor, Brazil elected a female president. Denmark, Poland, Korea, Argentina, Norway, Liberia, Cyprus are run by women. Twenty-two sovereign states in the world have already beat us on this,” McAvoy bluntly explained. The current video is a call back to the opening scene from the pilot of The Newsroom, where McAvoy gives a response with a similar tone. You can watch the original here.
