Last Living 9/11 Search And Rescue Dog Gets ‘Sweet 16’ Birthday Party
News| | By Jason Owen
The last known living search and rescue dog who helped save survivors trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center buildings on Sept. 11, 2001, is getting a very special birthday surprise. Bretagne, as a member of Texas Task Force 1, and her mom/handler Denise Corliss had an unforgettable first mission together.
With nearly 100 other dogs, Bretagne joined search and rescue teams at Ground Zero to help locate survivors in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. Denise and Bretagne have been inseparable ever since. When BarkPost heard about Bretagne’s heroism, and that she was turning an incredible 16 years old this year, they teamed up with 1 Hotels to bring Denise and Bretagne back to New York City for the “ultimate Best Dog’s Day” and celebrate a “Sweet 16” for sweet Bretagne. It was a fitting gift to thank Bretagne for her service all those years ago, and her continued service after, as well as allowing Denise and Bretagne to visit New York not in the presence of tragedy and desolation, but to see the beautify and majesty that has captivated millions for hundreds of years. We just wonder if they multiplied those 16 candles by 7… Happy Birthday, Bretagne! You and all the other service dogs out there truly deserve it.
