Men Read Sexist, Vulgar Tweets to Female Sports Writers in Emotional PSA
Two female sports writers exposed the dark side of working in sports media in an eye-catching PSA you have to see. On Tuesday, sports website Just Not Sports released “#Morethanmean- Women in Sports ‘Face’ Harassment,” a video that shows men reading sexist, disparaging, and vulgar tweets out loud to popular sports writers, Julie DiCaro and Sarah Spain. DiCaro works as a writer for Sports Illustrated‘s The Cauldron, while Spain is a writer for ESPN W and is a radio host for ESPN.
The purpose of the PSA is to create awareness of harassment of women in sports media. The catch is that DiCaro and Spain are already privy to the tweets. They know exactly what they say. The men on the other hand, have no clue. Safe to say, as they read the tweets aloud, things get uncomfortable very quickly. Some of the mean tweets included:
“One of the players should beat you to death with their hockey stick.” “I hope your dog gets hit by a car, c**t.” “Hopefully, this c**t Julie DiCaro is Bill Cosby’s next victim. That would be classic.”The men who read the vulgar tweets clearly feel very uncomfortable and apologized on behalf of their entire gender. The video ends with the words, “We wouldn’t say it to their faces. So let’s not type it.” The PSA has been viewed over 1 million times. DiCaro took to Facebook to comment on the video. Other women sports writers gave their support via Twitter.
