‘Star Wars’ Force Is Strong With Eight Wins at Saturn Awards
Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominated the 2016 Saturn Awards with eight wins on Wednesday night. The record-breaking installment of the sci-fi franchise went into the Burbank, California, ceremony with 15 nominations and took home eight honors, including the top prize of Best Science Fiction Film, beating out the likes of Ex Machina, Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian and Terminator: Genisys.
Harrison Ford’s return as Han Solo earned him the Best Actor trophy, while Adam Driver landed Best Supporting Actor. The Force Awakens also won Best Writing, Best Editing, Best Music, Best Make-Up and Best Special Effects. Guillermo Del Toro’s horror film Crimson Peak landed three wins – Best Horror Film, Best Actress for Jessica Chastain, and Best Production Design. Other winners in the film categories included Charlize Theron (Best Actress for Mad Max: Fury Road), Ridley Scott (Best Director for The Martian), Ant-Man (Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture), Furious 7 (Best Action/Adventure Film), and Bridge of Spies (Best Thriller). In the television category, The Walking Dead scored three wins for Best Horror TV Series, Best Supporting Actress (Danai Gurira) and Best Younger TV Actor (Chandler Riggs). Earning two wins each were Hannibal (Best Action/Thriller TV Series and Best Supporting Actor for Richard Armitage) and Outlander (Best Fantasy TV Series and Best Actress for Caitriona Balfe). Best Science Fiction TV Series went to Continuum, Bruce Campbell’s return as Ash Williams won him Best Actor for Ash vs Evil Dead and William Shatner scored the Best Guest Star prize for his stint on supernatural drama Haven. Shatner’s Star Trek family also had a big night as his former co-star Nichelle Nichols was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while writer/producer Brannon Braga, who was behind both the TV series and feature films, was honored with the Special Recognition Award. Doctor Who star John Barrowman hosted the awards, which are presented by officials at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.
