Chris Pine, Caitlyn Jenner, Lady Gaga and Demi Lovato are among the 49 celebrities who appear in a hard-hitting new video honoring the 49 clubbers who lost their lives in the Orlando massacre earlier this month. A gunman opened fire in the Pulse nightclub on June 12 and now a host of stars – one for each person killed – have joined forces to lead a new Human Rights Campaign public service announcement masterminded by director Ryan Murphy.
The video begins with a black screen and the words: “On June 12, 2016, a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 others inside Pulse, an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on Latin night.” “It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBTQ people in U.S. history. The victims live on in our memory…. These are their names. These are their stories.” Lady Gaga then kicks off the list of those who perished in the massacre by offering details about 27-year-old Jean Carlos Nieves Rodriguez, the manager of a check-cashing store. Pine picks up the video, followed by Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Connie Britton. Actress Sarah Paulson honors Javier Jorge-Reyes and reveals the tragic Puerto Rican native will be buried in his birthplace, thanks to arrangements made by bosses at Gucci, for whom he worked. Murphy teamed up with Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin to come up with the video memorial, editing clips of the celebrity eulogies and photos of the deceased to construct a 18-minute film that debuts online on Wednesday. “We want to ensure that what we do is effective,” Griffin told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s on all of us to know each and every one of them by name and for their legacies to, in part, spur change on important issues.” The film also features Jane Fonda, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara, Chaz Bono, Evan Rachel Wood, and Florida native Angela Bassett, who says, “I grew up in St. Petersburg, so it felt like this happened in my backyard. It’s horrible we have to do this, but it’s an honor.”
